Team Health and Safety will continue to organize a Wellness Tent where camp members or visitors may go when they need support from the team or in the event of an emergency while rangers are notified. The Tent will be stocked with a variety of supplies that may assist team members in assessing and addressing the situation prior to the arrival of rangers. Any member of the camp may escort an individual requiring aid to the Tent and then notify any available member of Team Health and Safety to assist. A list of camp members of Team Health and Safety will be posted on the Tent and at various places throughout camp so to aid in identification of those members.
Team Health and Safety members can also be asked to respond to minor injuries of camp members which may occur at other camps assuming the injury is not better handled by Burning Man rangers and that the delay in finding a member of Team Health and Safety would not be expected to exacerbate the injury.
Team Health and Safety will review all aspects of camp infrastructure during the camp build to assess any potential hazards and either remedy those hazards when able or mark potential hazards with highly visible tape for the awareness of camp members and visitors.
Prevention is the best plan to ensure camp members are able to have a fun Burn uninterrupted by injury. No matter what you may have heard, the motto is “Safety FIRST.”
In 2016 we created a rotating “on duty” camp safety officer. This individual would not need to be a member of Team Health and Safety, rather this would be a volunteer role spread throughout the camp. Shifts would run for 8 hours and someone would be on duty 24 hours per day. The volunteer would wear a bright pink neon vest to identify him as someone to call upon in case of emergency. The volunteer would coordinate activation of the response – sending someone to find Burning Man rangers, escorting the individual to the Wellness Tent, finding a member of Team Health and Safety, etc. – as required by the situation. Overnight, the individual on duty would hang the vest on the door of his tent/RV/yurt to continue the availability of emergency response. Volunteers would be expected to be sober during the 8 hour shift. All volunteers will receive a short training by the Team Health and Safety lead at the beginning of the week.
Volunteering to be the camp's Health & Safety Officer for a shift is a beautiful and meaningful gift that you can give to the entire camp. In other camps, those who volunteer for this position have received an outpouring of love and appreciation for taking a stand for everyone's safety. Everyone gets the additional peace of mind that someone is looking out for them.
Team Health and Safety organized in 2015 in response to a camp need for analysis of the safety of camp structures and utilities and to provide first-line support in the event of emergencies while Burning Man rangers are notified. As we enter the 2017 Burn, camp leadership has requested further involvement of the team in solidifying existing activities and building out new functions which may support our goal of a healthy and safe camp environment.
