Tips For Drivers

  • Dress comfortably, it's a long trip
  • Designate a co-Pilot for navigation, calls, etc.
  • Drive *exactly* the speed limit or lower - the cops are *very* strict
  • Keep your BM ticket on you at all times!!!
  • Discourage passengers from drinking, etc., during the trip
  • Watch out for animals crossing smaller roads
  • Switch often with other drivers, even if you don't feel tired
  • Do not try to pull off or park on soft shoulders of roads - it’s very easy to get stuck or roll over
  • Don't try to pass other vehicles once you're off the highway
  • If you must stop for any reason, let other vehicles know by phone

Tips For Passengers

  • Dress comfortably, it's a long trip
  • Pamper your driver with coffee, snacks, road head, stories, etc.
  • Keep your BM ticket on you at all times!
  • Wear a seatbelt unless you're moving around
  • Have pillows, books, music, boyfriends handy for long waits
  • Do NOT leave the vehicle until it’s parked in line on the playa, and then stay close by and ready to jump in when the line moves.

Ranger Tip:

Driving in the City

Everyone by now should know that vehicle passes are required to enter Black Rock City.  After you arrive at camp only *authorized* vehicles bearing the correct identification sticker may drive on the open playa.  As always even those vehicles may not drive on pedestrian walkways (the Esplanade or A Street) or inside the perimeter at the Man. If you don’t have an identification sticker you may only drive directly from Gate/Greeters to your camp via city streets.  In other words “Park it and leave it!”

If you need to drive for any purpose you will require a vehicle permit sticker. Failure to obtain a pass (and affix it to your vehicle) will most likely involve a stop by law enforcement. If you’d like to avoid this, please talk to your placer on playa about a temporary vehicle permit. If you are bringing a registered art piece you can also obtain these from the Artery.

How to Avoid Getting Pulled Over

Almost every year, someone in our camp gets pulled over by police on the way to the Burn. Here are some tips to avoid this:

  • Speeding: drive the speed limit at all times … during the event the speed limit on Gate Road is 10 mph and within BRC (after the Greeters station) is 5 mph.
  • Safe driving: drive carefully and safely, wear your seatbelt, don’t drive erratically, ride on the roof of your vehicle or hang off the side, or drink and drive … and use your turn signals.
  • Obscured license plates: make sure your rear license plate isn’t blocked by your bike, bike rack, dirt or anything else (you might consider attaching your license plate to your bike so it’s clearly visible, but if you do, make sure it’s illuminated with a clip-on LED).
  • Registration tags: have up-to-date valid registration tags on your vehicle AND trailer.
  • Non-functioning lights: make sure your license plate lights, tail lights, running lights, turn signals and headlights are all working.
  • Open containers: never have open alcohol in your vehicle.
  • Load & littering: make sure your load is safely and reasonably attached, and never toss anything out the window.
  • Non-permitted driving: once you enter BRC and park your vehicle at your campsite, you cannot drive it in Black Rock City without a BRC Department of Mutant Vehicles-issued permit sticker.
  • Of course, always carry a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Lastly, being nice if you do get pulled over makes things go much smoother.

Ranger Tip:

GARS (95.1 FM)

GARS is the Gate Advisory Radio Station.  If you tune in you will find pre-recorded messages about what is going on at the gate for both your arrival and your departure from the city. The basic info will include such topics as: how long IS the line currently? and How long it will most likely take you to get from/to the highway?

This station will also be used to broadcast up to date or emergency information (such as a gate closure).  Since the info is going to be on a loop you will be able to tune in and get the information you need without having to wait through long periods listening to music that you may not like. Cool stuff that, especially if you have a vehicle that's not so good idling.

Getting There

The ride to Black Rock City can be fun, but at times boring, particularly when waiting in lines. The goal of the trip is for everyone to get there in one piece, safely and without incident. While it may be tempting to party it up on the way, if you get pulled over it could be the only partying you do.

Save it for the playa!
