The higher we fly, the farther we fall. When you live in a utopian society for 10 days, the rest of the world feels further and further away, almost like an alternate universe. Then you drive off the Playa…
It happens the first time you stop for gas and food on the way home: a jarring feeling of culture shock. seeing shelves upon shelves of Stuff to buy, handling money, sleeping in a real bed again - it all can feel strange after an intense week on the playa.
You also might feel a bit down. Did you think after all these months of preparation and anticipation, and the craziest week ever, you could go back to life as usual?
This happens to all burners, and we call it decompression. It's a post-climactic state of exhaustion and disenchantment with the daily routines of life. It's a cultural, social, and sometimes chemical withdrawal. And it gets better - just give yourself time. Remember, your GlamCock brothers are probably going through the same thing. If you're feeling down, reach out. Board games, movie nights, and cuddle puddles are highly recommended.
In many places, "decompression parties" are held by burners, who want to reconnect and remind themselves of why It is all so, so worth it. Attend a party if you can, connect with other GlamCocks and burners, share photos, videos and memories. And give yourself a break. There's plenty of time before you need to start thinking about what next year has in store for you, because remember: Next year was better!
