The GlamCocks had humble beginnings. Our forefathers, Dusty and Garet, had a popular blog called ScenicBoys, sharing their many camping, hiking and traveling adventures with their friends. Many joined them on these adventures over the years.
The ScenicBoys promoted nature and nakedness, friendship and family, conservation of nature, and expressions of love. The ethos of the ScenicBoys, and the family spirit they embodied, became the foundation for the GlamCocks.
In 2009, Dusty and Garet, went to Burning Man for the first time, and the event’s art theme that year was “Evolution.” The weather was tough that year, with lots of dust to contend with, including full days of white outs. They didn’t have much more than a canopy for shade and a tent for shelter, but they still had a great time!
Dusty and Garet returned home and told many friends about the experience, eventually convincing some of them to join for the following year.
Dusty and Garet’s stories of the Playa convinced ten of their friends to come to Burning Man in 2010.
Rather than focusing on individual gifts to give to Burning Man, Garet proposed that the group all pitch in to help fund and build a collective gift: a large wooden tower, the Roost, that would offer guests a view over Black Rock City, and a place to hang out and dance. After some brainstorming, this motley crew decided to call themselves the “Emerald City Glam Cocks.”
That year we arrived on Monday to a morning of rain and a double rainbow, we finished construction by Wednesday and held our very first Sunset Party to celebrate!

After the 2010 Burn, word about Burning Man and our camp began to spread among our circles of friends. In the summer of 2011, the camp had grown from 12 GlamCocks to well over 30! This included friends from San Francisco, Boston, New York, Seattle, and the “Backcountry Boys” from Boise. With so many regions represented, we could no longer call ourselves the “Emerald City Glam Cocks,” so we tried out “Glam Cock Kingdom” for a year.
The Roost came back for its second year, with a few upgraded beams, the 2nd floor Tower Shower, and garlands of bandanas. We also inaugurated the Homodomo, and again hosted sunset parties. This year we also had our first collaboration project: an impromptu dance-off in the middle of the street with our neighbors, Jerk Camp.
During the burn, we became friends with three cheeky boys from Australia, including Vincent, who captured some of their shenanigans, and some of ours, in a fantastic video he called “Welcome Home.”
Vincent would come back the following year to join the camp.
