It’s hard to measure the impact that having a new logo had on our group’s identity, and our public image, but it was significant. We all immediately fell in love with David’s design. It was simple, fun, and flexible. We plastered it on necklaces, camp signs, temporary tattoos, our website, and more. It became a powerful symbol for our group, and would drive our name and brand recognition beyond the Playa in the years to come.
2012 was the year we realized we were creating something truly special, that was inspiring more and more people to come to Burning Man, and to join our family.
After a spectacular burn in 2011, we decided to up our game for 2012 and apply for placement as an official Theme Camp.
The camp membership grew to about 50 GlamCocks, and we continued organizing into regional groups with leads to help manage our size. Our illustrious Foreman, Garet, designed a giant new addition to the Roost, creating a huge dance floor for the sunset parties. Aaron and cockerel Rui came up with a lighting plan. Two cockerels from Chicago, David and Sean, brought some gorgeous decorations and came up with our camp logo, and that was promptly crafted into our glittering GlamCocks sign by Jason’s uncle, Marc.
In 2012 we began the tradition of regions creating, decorating and hosting our theme parties, which were played by DJs Alex Funk, Tiger, Christopher Robin, and our newly adopted cockerel, Vincent. Vincent brought with him another cockerel, Shane, who performed as Courtney Act.
It’s no exaggeration to say that we were so excited and proud to be a Theme Camp, and it felt like the whole camp went above and beyond to contribute in many different ways.
Inspired by David’s new logo, Jason’s talented uncle Marc donated his time to create a brand new, gorgeous glittering camp sign!
In the weeks before the Burn, the New York GlamCocks threw a rooftop party - The GlamCocks Glowlympics - to raise funds for camp and to proudly debut the new sign.
While actually very fragile (made of little more than fabric, foam core and holiday lights), the sign has been carefully stored and cared for, and is still in use today.
Perhaps the only thing more powerful than the logo in developing our identity—not just to the world, but also to ourselves—was Vincent’s documentary. Meet the GlamCocks was based on camp interviews and footage he shot during the burn in 2012. This 50-minute film explored our family love, our passion for creativity, and our joyful and magical adventures on the playa. By capturing these so well, this film would inspire us, and others, to come back to the Playa year after year.
The logo and this film were incredible gifts for our camp, and they set the stage for us to grow even bigger in the following years.
